The extent of Callum McGregor’s injury isn’t yet known, but the news the player will be out longterm is a massive blow to Celtic’s season.

McGregor has been the leader in the Celtic dressing room and the constant through so much change.

Even when Callum broke bones in his face last season, he had the manager’s back and went into battle with a mask on. Helping the bhoys to a title they had no right to win, by all accounts.

Now we’re facing up to a lot of football without our captain, it’s not just a position on the field we need to fill, it’s a leader on the park.

Oli Abildgaard was signed to play in Callum’s role but by all accounts the player isn’t going to come in and be that leader, even if he can successfully play the role of holding midfielder.

Callum was the connector between defence and attack, he got the ball out and made sure our talented attacking line got up the park.

He was the man in the huddle shouting orders and keeping everyone calm during big games.

Joe Hart has been vice captain for a lot of last season. The respect he has in the dressing room is well documented. However, when you’re a manager, having an outfield player acting as captain is usually preferred.

In that case, who is going to step up for Celtic. Not to be the footballer Callum is, but the leader he has become.

Ange will be looking around the dressing room, not delegating or anointing someone to the role. The Australian will be looking for someone to take the bull by the horns and make it their role to be their for the rest of the team.

Joe can be that guy in the dressing room, but on the pitch. We need someone to give us that drive. Does Greg Taylor have the mentality or is CCV about to find himself in a leadership role within the dressing room. Time will tell. There’s a clear nervousness among the support of how we will do without our captain.
