DERMOT DESMOND has had a hand in most of our managers being chosen for over twenty years. Most of these years he’s been flanked by the man he brought in to stabilise the business during the latter part of Martin O’Neill era, Peter Lawwell.

There’s one thing Dermot has asked most of his manager’s to sign up to over the years; a one-year rolling contract. It’s what Neil Lennon was on both times at the club, it’s what Gordon Strachan signed up to, as did Ronny Deila. It’s what Brendan Rodgers initially signed up for before signing a four-year deal the following season.

With Eddie Howe heavily tipped to come in, I can’t see the English manager being satisfied with that sort of deal. Considering the depth of the rebuild, I just can’t see Eddie and his reps accepting any kind of deal like that.

This might be the first instance in quite some time we hear a new Celtic manager has a three-year deal straight off the bat, an uncomfortable concession by Desmond, perhaps, but a necessary one. Purely speculation of course, however, it would make a lot of sense.

Celtic is a long term project at this point and both the club and Eddie should give each other the time to build something special.

  1. Too big a gamble. Same deal as Rodgers. Celtic would be the biggest job Howe has had, by far. What if he cant take the heat?
