Osaze Urhoghide has opened up about how he was nearly lost to the game before Sheffield Wednesday handed him a contract.

The new Celtic defender could make his debut for the Hoops against his former club on Wednesday afternoon, but he speaks highly of the coaches st his former club – giving him the platform to make the move to Celtic.

Osaze will have to work even harder to get into the Celtic first team this season. The young defender will have to show he’s up to the task. If he can prove to Ange Postecoglou he can be trusted in the heart of Celtic’s defence – the Australian will have no qualms about putting the defender in.

Speaking to RecordSport, the new Celtic signing spoke about his journey so far in the game:

“It’s been a difficult route, but those hard times made me what I am today.

“It has not been plain sailing all the time.

“It was disappointing. I don’t think people understand what it’s like when it happens to you.

“Some people can’t handle it. But I thought: ‘I am not going to give up on my dreams’.

“Sometimes I was working alone with no one else there. But I worked hard. I am going to work even harder now I am where I am.

“I was at a Goals. I had my friends with me, but when they went back to their pro teams I was on my own sometimes.

“It was hard. But I thought: ‘I am going to keep pushing and try to get to the next level. I am not going to let my career go to waste’

“Sheffield Wednesday was my first trial. I thought: ‘I am just going to give it everything’. The coaches saw that.

“They saw my passion and they saw the way I play as well. My hard work paid off and I signed. I progressed to the first team. The rest is history.

“There were some other clubs around but I thought Celtic was a place where I could develop, thrive off the pressure and keep pushing me on. Also the manager: I liked the way he was, the way he works on younger players’ development. He could really help me get to the next level.

Asked about if there has been any initiation process at Celtic yet – Osaze confirmed nothing yet but he has a song in his back pocket if the bhoys ask him to give them a song.

“It’s great being here. Nobody has mentioned anything (about an initiation). But I will have to make sure I get prepared for it. It is bound to happen. It will probably be R&B again.”

Celtic have three games down south during their Welsh training camp before heading back up the road.

The Hoops will play Preston and West Ham at Celtic Park later this month – these two friendlies in between Celtic’s first Champions league qualifier.

It’s interesting times for Celtic and it will be good to see what Ange Postecoglou has in store for this side.
