Brendan Rodgers has praised teenage full-back Colby Donovan after his impressive introduction to senior football, confirming the youngster will once again be part of the Celtic squad for Thursday’s Europa League tie with Braga.
The 19-year-old has stepped up impressively in recent weeks, making his European debut against Red Star Belgrade while featuring domestically, where his energy and composure drew plaudits from supporters and pundits alike. With Alistair Johnston sidelined and Anthony Ralston only recently returning from injury, Donovan has grasped his opportunity in the first-team picture.
Rodgers admitted he has been hugely impressed with the youngster’s mentality and personality since returning to Celtic, highlighting traits that he feels are essential for anyone hoping to succeed at the club.
He told Celtic TV: “He’ll be available for the squad, yes. I thought he was outstanding last weekend. He’s been a real bright spark since coming up. I’ve really liked Colby since I came back.
“Just his personality, what it takes and what it needs to play for Celtic. From a mentality perspective, he’s shown really good signs of that early on. You have to manage young players like that.
“Like I said, he’s played his couple of games with Scotland. He’s played games back-to-back with the first team, so you have to be mindful and manage that. I’ve been so pleased for him and great that he’s available for the squad.”
The manager now has a big decision to make with his team selection on Thursday. Does the youngster get the nod, or does he turn to Ralston, who has some more experience?
Alistair Johnston is edging closer to his return. Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that he’ll return to full training after the international break ahead of the Dundee game.
That’s a massive boost to have him back, so hopefully not too long until he pulls on the Celtic jersey once more.
