Rafa Benitez was the fourth favourite at the bookies to be the next Celtic manager just 24 hours ago but the Spaniard has gone from 10/1 yesterday to now being the favourite.

This is significant, up until now Neil Lennon has been the favourite to land the role on a permanent basis. All other candidates have sat behind the Irishman in proceedings.

Today is the first day Neil hasn’t been at the top of the bookies list on The sack race.

What does this mean?

One of two things has happened in the last 24 hours – a spate of money has been put on the possibility of Rafa landing the Celtic job and the odds have been shortened or the bookies have adjusted their position due to strong rumours.

From where we’re sitting there were two events this weekend that could see a lot of people put money down on Rafa without any upfront knowledge. The Spaniard claimed this week he will sit down with Newcastle and try to thrash out a plan but was not committing to a new deal quite yet. Mix that in with Neil Lennon losing the Glasgow Derby and these odds make sense.
