SC Paderborn sporting director Sebastian Lange has told CeltsAreHere that Mika Baur made it clear he wanted to join Celtic before completing his move to Glasgow.
Speaking to CeltsAreHere, Lange said Baur’s desire to make the move to Celtic was an important part of the deal.
He said: “As a key player from the season we were promoted, we would actually have loved to keep Mika. When he expressed his wish to move to Celtic Glasgow, we didn’t want to stand in his way – especially given that he had less than a year left on his contract – on the condition that SCP07 also benefits from the move.
“We intend to make the most of this excellent financial opportunity to further strengthen our squad before the transfer window closes. We’d like to thank Mika for a trusting and successful spell with us and wish him all the best for the future.”
Paderborn would have preferred to keep the midfielder, but with less than a year left on his contract, they also had to think about the financial side of the situation.
Once Baur made it clear that he wanted to join Celtic, Paderborn were willing to let the move happen as long as the deal also worked for them.
That helps explain how the transfer came together.
Now that the deal is complete, the 22-year-old has committed his future to Celtic on a four-year contract.
Lange also confirmed that Paderborn plan to use the money from Baur’s departure to add to their squad before the transfer window closes.
It shows that while they would have liked to keep the midfielder, the deal also made sense from a financial point of view.
For Celtic, the comments give a clear insight into Baur’s thinking before the transfer.
The 22-year-old wanted the move to Glasgow and made that clear to Paderborn, helping the deal move forward.
