Celtic’s narrow yet significant 1-0 victory over Aberdeen at Pittodrie has extended their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to seven points, and Greg Taylor was once again pivotal.
The left-back’s impressive performance from the bench has drawn admiration, with Celtic legend Pat Bonner highlighting Taylor’s consistency and importance to Brendan Rodgers’ side.
Despite uncertainty over his long-term future, Taylor’s dink to Reo Hatate’s match-winning goal showed his value to the team, prompting calls for Celtic to prioritise securing the defender’s future.
Speaking on BBC Sportsound, Bonner lauded Taylor’s adaptability and effectiveness in Celtic’s system, particularly in the inverted full-back role that has become a cornerstone of Brendan Rodgers’ tactical setup:
“Yeah, he has. Listen, people were saying Celtic need a left-back and the guy keeps performing and coming in.
“He might go off it a little bit, most players do, but they have now Valle that’s come in on loan obviously, but is complimenting him when he’s not maybe just at, he can bring him in, obviously, adding to the left-back position.
“He gets it; he plays that inverted full-back role as well as anybody because he’s always on the move, he’s always looking for the ball, and he’s always getting the ball too.”
Taylor’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and with January approaching, he will soon be free to negotiate with other clubs.
Brendan Rodgers has made no secret of his desire to retain the Scotland international, acknowledging the left-back’s pivotal role in the team’s success.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Greg Taylor’s situation in January.
Brendan Rodgers wants to keep him, but it’s down to the player. With a child on the way, could he see it best to settle in Glasgow, or will he choose to head elsewhere for a new start?
