Former Celtic captain Paul Lambert has claimed that Mohamed Elyounoussi has ‘let the great Jock Stein down’, after last nights antics.
The Norwegian was spotted on his phone, after being subbed off and it became quite a talking point with Neil Lennon warning that he will face punishment. But as reported by the Daily Record, speaking on BBC Scotland’s Sportsound, Lambert seemed to take it a step further.
“There’s something wrong if Neil has said that. He played in a era where we were a really good side.
“I’m only going on what I seen on the TV but you look at the lad Elyounoussi on his phone, I know there’s been a big thing with that, you’re letting Celtic Football Club down, you’re letting the great Jock Stein down, you’re letting the management down.
“Celtic is an organisation, it’s not just an ordinary football club. It’s steeped in history, it’s a massive organisation and if you don’t grasp it and think it’s going to be easy and think you can take the club lightly, you’ll get found out and rightly so.
“What that guy did was let everyone down.”
Although Elyounoussi shouldn’t have been on his phone there are much worse matters in hand, that should be focussed on and didn’t appear to be by pundits last night.
Since the incident, the 26-year old has come out and apologised, insisting that he was simply checking the score of the other game in the group between AC Milan and Lille but understood it wasn’t professional.
This statement from Lambert really does seem like a bizarre one and unfair on the winger. As mentioned, there are a lot worse matters at and within the club now and one of them isn’t Elyounoussi.
Lambert s comments are not bizarre at all , they are spot on and regardless of his stupidity, the player should not have had his phone around him , did he know he was going to be subbed and would have stuck it in his tracksuit pocket to check when he went off , does other players do this also ? It’s total rubbish and completely disrespectful as Paul says . Yes there are other pressing issues on the park but let’s not overlook this & I hope he is punished for it . Celtic is Celtic, not a two Bob junior club !
With all the money players get. Can’t they afford Google glasses? Admittedly Moi shouldn’t use his phone (unless Neil or John have phoned him on it) Really, because, that games best forgotten. It will go down (along with all Celtics ‘shock’ defeats since 1967 in Lisbon) to be renembered for the wrong reasons. Using a phone is not a crime, neither should it be portrayed as one. Stop papering over the increasing Euro defeat chasm. Fir Park or bust now.
