Paulo Bernardo has written his name into the record books with Portugal’s U21s at the European Championships, becoming the most capped player in the history of the national youth setup.

The Celtic midfielder, currently on international duty, made his 31st appearance at this level during a dominant 4-0 win over Georgia, helping his side finish top of their group ahead of France on goal difference. It follows on from his goal against Poland earlier in the tournament – a performance that saw him equal the previous cap record held by Manuel Fernandes since 2008.

Now, with that milestone surpassed, Bernardo stands alone as the most experienced player in the history of Portugal’s U21 side. His performances throughout the group stages have underlined why he’s held in such high regard back home in the youth setup.

Portugal, unbeaten and brimming with confidence, are among the favourites heading into the knockout stages. Bernardo, with the captain’s armband, could be key in the country’s pursuit of the trophy.

It’s a proud moment for both player and club, with Brendan Rodgers likely keeping a close eye on the midfielder’s development. The more big-match experience Bernardo gains on the international stage, the more Celtic stand to benefit once he returns to Glasgow.
