Peter Grant Responds to Scott Brown’s Scathing Criticism

Scott Brown’s recent comments about former Celtic coach Peter Grant sparked plenty of discussion. Grant has now had his say.

Brown was speaking on Open Goal, where the former Celtic captain reflected on his career during a wide-ranging interview.

The conversation turned to Tony Mowbray’s spell in charge at Celtic. Mowbray was dismissed in March 2010 after a heavy defeat away to St Mirren, with Grant serving as a coach at the club during that time.

Brown revealed he had attracted interest from Newcastle United at the end of that season and admitted he would have left Celtic had Mowbray and Grant remained in place. He said:

“I think if Tony and Peter Grant were still there, I’d have been away straight away.

“I had no time for Peter Grant whatsoever.”

Asked to explain the issues between them, Brown added:

“Man management. Personal. Personality? Zero.

“Tony, I got on alright. But Peter Grant, no.”

Brown left little room for interpretation with his assessment.

Grant, who now works regularly with Celtic TV, was asked about Brown’s comments while appearing live on The Go Radio Football Show.

Rather than firing back, the former Celtic midfielder kept his response measured. He said:

“Everyone’s entitled to their opinion. I’d never tell anyone what to say or what they think of me. I’ve got a hell of a lot of friends who would say the opposite, but that’s life. We move on from it.

“I’m trying to think when it was, it was when I was at Celtic, so 10/15 years ago or something? I’ve not got that memory, obviously he does.

“It doesn’t concern me in the least. If it was Roy Aitken, Danny McGrain, Paul McStay or the great Tommy Burns, it would maybe concern me.

“I’ve never, ever been critical of somebody who’s criticised me. That’s life, I’ve had plenty of criticism. One thing is, I will sleep well in my bed tonight. That’s for sure.”

Grant’s answer was unlikely to satisfy anyone hoping for a public back-and-forth.

Brown made his feelings clear, but Grant had no interest in revisiting events from well over a decade ago. Instead, he accepted Brown’s right to his opinion before making it equally clear it carries little weight with him.

The reference to Roy Aitken, Danny McGrain, Paul McStay and the late, great Tommy Burns also offered an insight into whose opinions Grant values most. He wasn’t interested in escalating the situation.

Without knowing exactly what happened behind the scenes during Mowbray’s time at Celtic, there is only one side of the story regarding the issues Brown described. Grant has chosen not to offer another version or challenge Brown publicly.

From his perspective, there is nothing to gain from reopening old wounds. His response suggested he considers the matter finished, even if Brown’s comments have brought it back into the spotlight.
