Club Legend Murdo MacLeod has taken a swipe at Celtic’s recruitment after Peter Lawwell told the AGM the club had spent £35m since the summer of 2019.

Lawwell’s loaded figure in defence of supporters saying he and the board have been asleep at the wheel. While the CEO wanted to get that figure out there, it’s now being used as a stick in which to beat him.

The argument goes from you haven’t done enough to the club squandering money on players who never looked likely to cut it at Celtic. Wheeling in dealing in the market; for every van Dijk there’s five Marvin Compper’s.

Murdo Macleod brought up the very point when the £35m figure was talked about on this weeks Celtic Huddle Podcast.

“The players that are coming into the club, if you’re going to buy new players, they’ve got to be better than what was already at the club. That’s not been the case” Murdo explained to the

“We’re sitting here now, two games after watching Soro and Then Turnbull playing, even the young keeper Hazard into the team, you’re looking at a wee freshness in there”

The way Celtic have spent money and their strategy has seen some sketchy deals be made.

We’re constantly being shown up in Europe against lesser and less financially well-off opposition. There are many factors at work but if Peter wants to bring up the number, then it has to bring up the bigger picture of why we’re again outside looking in at the Champions League and have failed to compete in the Europa League.

Peter likes to talk about stats which back him up, you won’t find him mentioning Celtic have only qualified for the Champions League FOUR times in the last TWELVE years.

Domestic dominance masking the utter failure to progress or even just compete at Europe’s top table. Sorry, Peter, I know just being better than Rangers is good enough for some fans but we should be demanding more. When you have that philosophy they’re always going to catch you at some point. Think bigger, think beyond Scotland and domestic football takes care of itself.

  1. You can spend hundreds of millions but when u buy rubbish it’s still rubbish. Our tranfer/scouting is atrocious, whoever is responsible should be sacked.

  2. I believe its twofold. A CEO who is useless in transfer negotiations. There have been a lot of last minute or penny pinching cheap buys not up to scratch. This, in conjunction with a manager who wont give new faces a chance, (Mr. Conservative, everyone except me is to blame) even in a diddy league and when players aren’t competing or in his words ” don’t want to be here”.
