A Former Premier League striker has urged Ivan Toney to sign for Celtic and snub Brentford if it came down to a straight choice.

Celtic have been chasing the frontman for quite some time but reports on Friday claimed Celtic were finally closing in on Albian Ajeti from West Ham. The deal is still to be concluded and until then Toney’s name is on the table.

Peterborough chairman Barry Fry openly admitted Toney would prefer a move to Celtic and Kevin Phillips back that up talking to Football Insider. The retired pro believes the chance of Champions League football and being part of a team which could make history should be the carrot.

“I have always been an advocate of trying to stay in the Championship or Premier League.

“But if it was a choice between Brentford and Celtic and you have a chance to play in the Champions League and a chance to be part of a squad that could make history – I would opt to go to Celtic.

“To play in front of those supporters, we have all heard it and seen it, it would be awesome.

“To have this chance at this stage in his career, to play in the Champions League, wow.

“Not many player get the opportunity to do that so I would have to opt for Celtic.”

Celtic struggled to break down Kilmarnock on Sunday. They were not able to change it up or find a way through with what they had. Having something different up top this season to combat that kind of resolute defensive performance has to be something high up in Neil Lennon’s list. We await to see Celtic’s next move.
