Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Daizen Maeda could make his return to action next week as Celtic prepare for a vital run of fixtures following their defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle.

The Japanese forward has been sidelined with a hamstring injury but is now close to full fitness and could be in contention for minutes against Falkirk on Wednesday or Rangers at Hampden next Sunday.

Celtic’s 3–1 loss in Gorgie exposed a lack of sharpness in attack, with the team missing Maeda’s relentless pressing and direct running. His absence has been felt on both flanks, where Celtic have struggled for energy and penetration. With the league campaign stuttering and cup ambitions on the line, Maeda’s return could provide a timely boost.

Rodgers offered a cautious update after the defeat, confirming that Maeda will rejoin training this week but stressing the importance of managing his recovery carefully. The manager is hopeful of having him available soon but won’t risk rushing the forward back too early.

Maeda’s intensity and work rate have been a key part of Celtic’s attacking play under Rodgers. His return would add much-needed pace and movement to a side currently short on confidence and creativity in the final third.

He said: (BBC Scotland), “Daizen, we have a look, he’ll join the training tomorrow, but we obviously have to be careful with that.”

Rodgers’ comments suggest that Celtic’s medical team will monitor Maeda closely over the next few days before deciding if he can play a part in the upcoming fixtures. The forward’s recovery has been steady, and his reintegration into training is seen as a major step forward.

Celtic face Falkirk at Celtic Park on Wednesday in the Premiership before turning their attention to a massive Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Rangers at Hampden. Having Maeda available for either match would be a significant lift for Rodgers as he looks to spark a response from his squad.

The Japanese international’s energy has often set the tone for Celtic’s pressing game, something that’s been missing in recent weeks. His return could help restore some of the intensity and aggression that were badly lacking at Tynecastle.

While Rodgers remains cautious, the possibility of Maeda featuring in the coming days offers a glimmer of positivity for Celtic after a difficult spell. With confidence fragile and key games looming, the forward’s comeback could arrive at just the right time.
