Mikey Johnston is a player that divides opinion in the Celtic support. The winger can be exciting and has shown his talent on a number of occasions. However, fans voice their frustration about his inconsistency and constant injuries.

He’s an academy graduate, so having him around is certainly useful, especially for UEFA squad requirements.

This season, Mikey has been far from impressive. When given the limited minutes he’s received, he’s not really done much. In his twenty games last season, he registered just one assist and failed to hit the back of the net.

Despite this, Ange Postecoglou still has faith in Mikey and is determined to give him the chance to shine. [Football Scotland]

“Mikey is one of those players, if he stays healthy, he has ability. We know he’s got talent. He’s got to be able to do that on a consistent basis.

“He is in an area of the park where we’ve got some real competition and some real quality.

“That’s what he needs to be able to do to match the other guys in his position, other guys like Daizen, Jota, Liel and James Forrest.

“There’s no reason why he can’t do that.

“That’s the opportunity he gets now and it’s the same for everyone in this pre-season.

“Irrespective of what happened last year, they are all starting from a space where they can stake a claim and make a contribution this year.”

Make or Break for Celtic’s Mikey Johnston

No one wants to see a player fail, especially someone who’s been with the club since 2008. However, his displays haven’t been very promising.

He was a player that many expected to leave this summer, whether it was on loan or permanently. However, going by Ange’s latest comments, it’s likely that Johnston is here to stay.

Ange will give him an opportunity, he must use it to prove fans wrong and show why the boss has installed his faith in him.
