Leigh Griffiths Celtic contract has expired. The striker’s final year option was not taken up by the club and he’s been allowed to talk to other clubs for some time now.

Leigh said he spoke with the manager during Ange Postecoglou’s self-isolation period, he then claimed last week he was set for talks with the manager at Lennoxtown.

Since then, we’ve not seen Leigh out on the training pitch at Lennoxtown and he’s been training on his own.

Celtic fans noticed on Wednesday afternoon the player had purged mentions of Celtic on his instagram bio and unfollowed the club. As modern day signs go – it looks like the writings on the wall.

Chris Sutton was asked about Leigh’s chances of staying on at the Hoops this summer and he just wasn’t certain anyway.

Sutton believe it comes down to trust and right now Ange Postecoglou can’t trust Leigh, and can’t rely on him.

“Leigh Griffiths is posting pictures on Instagram. I’m back in training, I’m getting fit. Well let’s see.” Sutton told RecordSport.

“The Griffiths debate is getting tiresome.

“Scotland at Euro 2020, Griffiths should’ve been picked? No he shouldn’t because he wasn’t at the required fitness level, hasn’t been all season.

“So let’s hope if Leigh is back in the gym that he’s up to speed and a massive asset because, if he is, then Ange Postecoglou is going to be in a very good position.

“But Leigh’s one of these players who Ange will be scrutinising and looking at closely.

“Everything about Leigh is going to be attitude, attitude, attitude. Fitness levels. Is he going to be fit enough to play 90 minutes for three times a week?

“If he’s not, then I’m afraid that’s unacceptable. He isn’t 40. He’s let his standards drop.

“There may be reasons for that, but the frustration is that he’s so, so talented.

“You don’t lose that finishing ability. Some of the goals he scored – and he’s a quarter fit – are eye opening. The one at Aberdeen. That lovely, low backlift, that sharpness of thought, the way he moves in the box at times is instinct.

“It’s all there, but the fitness levels aren’t. He’s going to be a real dilemma for the manager coming in and what he’s going to do.

“I bet at the moment Postecoglou is thinking: I can’t trust him.

“He’s another one who’s playing for his career. It’s not enough coming off the bench with little cameos. Scoring at Dundee or whatever or running over to the crowd. That’s all well and good for him, but little cameos won’t win Celtic back the title.

“Celtic need a consistent striker.”
