Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has called on Hoops striker Giorgos Giakoumakis to show more improvements as he backed the frontman to play a crucial part in the clubs up-and-coming fixtures.

After a two month lay-off, the Greek striker made a return from injury on Saturday evening, scoring his sides opening goal of the game and adding his second goal for the club since joining on summer transfer deadline day.

Speaking to the media after the game, Postecoglou provided an assessment on Giakoumakis’ performance as the 28-year old gets set for a run in the side amidst some potentially crucial fixtures in the clubs season.

“It was good for him to get a goal. He hasn’t played much, so it was good for him to get 90 minutes,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“He has to improve on that, but like all strikers, it’s good for him to get a goal, and he took it well. We need him to improve, and he will.

“The main thing in cup competitions is to progress, and we did that today. We could have made it easier for ourselves by killing the game in the first half. We created enough opportunities to make it a more comfortable victory. There’s some mitigating factors, so I can’t be too hard on the players. The most important thing is we are in the next round.”

It was good to see the former VVV-Venlo get himself back amongst the goals after another spell on the sidelines, thanks to injury.

So far, it hasn’t been an ideal start to life as a Celtic player for Giakoumakis. However, with injury issues and players on international duty, the next few games provide the big frontman with an opportunity to showcase why he deserves a run in the starting 11 under Postecoglou.

The Celtic boss and fans alike will certainly be hoping that he can step up to the plate, with both Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda set to be missing.
