Celtic now have a clearer picture of the clubs potentially standing between them and a return to the Champions League proper after their dramatic title triumph over Hearts.
Martin O’Neill’s side completed one of the most unlikely title comebacks in recent Scottish football history on the final day of the season, with late goals from Daizen Maeda and Callum Osmand sparking chaotic scenes at Celtic Park.
That victory did not just secure the Premiership trophy.
It also booked Celtic into the Champions League Play-Off round – leaving the Hoops just one tie away from returning to Europe’s elite competition.
As things currently stand, Celtic’s projected play-off opponents include:
- AGF
- Omonia Nicosia
- Mjällby AIF
- Viking FK
- LASK

There are also several other possible opponents depending on how the earlier qualifying rounds unfold:
- Kairat Almaty
- ŠK Slovan Bratislava
- Lech Poznań
- AEK Athens
- NK Celje
The exact picture remains fluid because six clubs will still emerge from previous qualifying rounds before the play-off stage is finalised.
However, Celtic’s UEFA coefficient ranking should ensure they are seeded for the draw, theoretically offering a more favourable tie on paper.
Still, Celtic supporters will know better than anyone how dangerous these qualifiers can become.
Last season’s shock exit to Kairat Almaty remains fresh in the memory after the Kazakh champions dumped Celtic out despite the Scottish side entering the tie as overwhelming favourites.
That defeat ultimately pushed Celtic into the Europa League instead – something the club will be desperate to avoid repeating given the financial and sporting importance of reaching the Champions League proper.
The stakes could hardly be higher.
Champions League qualification would massively strengthen Celtic heading into another major rebuild this summer, while failure would again drop the club directly into the Europa League league phase.
The draw for the play-off round takes place on August 3, 2026.
First legs are scheduled for August 18/19, with the return fixtures taking place one week later.
