CHRIS SUTTON has not pulled any punches when it comes to Celtic’s old head of recruitment Lee Congerton and what he did at the club.

Congerton spent two and a half years at the club and didn’t have much to show for it. Details are emerging all the time about his tenure but it’s safe to say Celtic fans were delighted when the scout joined Brendan Rodgers at Leicester.

The Englishman can’t really hang his hat on much from his time at Celtic and Chris Sutton has drove the point home in his RecordSport column.

‘Congerton’s strike rate when it came to signings was fairly abysmal and a lot of the success was built on those who were already in the building.

‘Celtic have players such as Scott Brown, Callum McGregor and James Forrest to thank, while Scott Sinclair early on, Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard were the only real standout signings over three seasons.

‘The club need to get back to discovering hidden gems, the bargain buys that can do a job for the team in the short-term and make money over a longer period.’

You consider Moussa and Sinclair were already there when Lee finally joined Rodgers at Celtic so Edouard would be the man Lee could at least try to stake a claim for.

Celtic are now in the hands of Nicky Hammond who already seems to know his remit more and has a little bit more power than just identifying targets.

It will be interesting to see how Hammond gets on over the next 18 months. It’s not an easy job to find players on the cheap who are ready to handle the pressure of playing for Celtic. It has been done plenty of times before by John Park..
