Former Celtic player and pundit Kris Commons has called for right-back Anthony Ralston to be given recognition for his recent performances by gaining a call-up to Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad.

As quoted by the Glasgow Times, writing in his column for the Daily Mail, Commons was full of praise for the academy prospect, who has surprised many fans with his performances so far this season.

Commons also claims that he is fully deserving of a call up to the international stage, with his displays for Celtic showing he is the best player for that position on current form.

“Tom Rogic and Anthony Ralston look like two new signings. Ralston, in particular, is a great example of the way a coach can develop a player and help them improve.

“The vast majority of Celtic fans probably wouldn’t have wanted him anywhere near the first team this season because, quite simply, they didn’t think he was good enough.

“But his performances over the past month have definitely silenced a lot of critics. It takes a lot of courage and mental strength to fight your way back like Ralston has.

“On current form, he’s the best right-back in the country and should be in Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad this week for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.”

At the start of next month, Scotland takes on a triple header of Denmark, Moldova and Austria as they attempt to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Tomorrow afternoon, Steve Clarke will announce the squad he will be taking to those fixtures, and many, including Commons, have called for Ralston to receive a call-up to the squad.

Not many would have been expecting to hear that a couple of months ago, with the 22-year old’s future at the club being in limbo, and some even criticised the club’s decision to hand him a fresh one-year deal.

However, he has proved everyone wrong with his display’s in recent weeks and made himself part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad going forward.

We may have brought a new right-back in, with Josip Juranovic joining the Hoops. But at this stage, he could have a test on his hands to budge Ralston from that spot.
