Former Celtic striker and BT Sport pundit, Chris Sutton believes that next seasons rebuild could cost the club upwards of £60 million.

Writing in his weekly Daily Record column, Sutton gave his thoughts on the inevitable up and coming rebuild of the whole club, saying it could cost the club an eye-watering amount to get back to the top of Scottish Football in terms of league position.

“Unless Dermot Desmond funds an astonishing overhaul to a hefty amount of millions or the club pulls another O’Neill or Rodgers rabbit out of a hat, the fightback to catch Rangers may be an arduous process.

“As much as some supporters may not want to admit it, their attempts to win Ten in a Row has put them quite away behind their city rivals.

“It might take at least £60 million for Celtic to catch the new champions. Of course, there will be money coming in to put to that figure. I’d expect that the departures of Odsonne Edouard, Kristoffer Ajer and Ryan Christie could bring around £30 million into the building.

“Reinvesting that and the same will be required to replace the departing figures and finding the players to improve the squad.

“Martin had some money to invest and it was needed at the time. Celtic are going to need some serious cash to be put into the squad this time around as well because the gap is 20 points at the moment and you wouldn’t bet on that not being extended by the time the 38 games are concluded.”

Looking at the squad as we speak, it is incredible looking at the number of players we will likely need to replace and even add to certain positions.

It is also highly likely that we will be saying goodbye to the likes of Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer but those transfers could help up going into the rebuild.

For any new manager or director of football coming into the club, this could be seen as a mammoth task but at the same time a very exciting one, almost building the club back up again to where it belongs.

  1. Less than a third of 60m could have got Celtic the 10. No they would not sack the management and coaches. Replace them. And buy two centre backs, a center mid and a striker. Now look at the true cost. With true hindsight comes great responsibility. Now Dermo go and enjoy your new Arab stallion. Whist we weep in our ale at what could have been.
