CELTIC have been tipped to make it out of their group by footballer turned pundit, Noel Whelan.

The Hoops have had a mixed start in the competition, coming close to earning a result against Real Madrid to being held to a draw by Shakhtar Donetsk.

However, the second place is still there for the taking, with Real Madrid looking likely to top the section. Shakhtar currently sits second with four points, with Celtic behind them with one point to their name. Leipzig sits at the bottom of the group with no points.

However, fans are confident of results in their remaining home games and hoping to pick up at least one in Germany in the next matchday.

Noel Whelan, a former player, believes that Celtic can make it out of their group. He told Football Insider;

“Anything can happen – but they’ll be fighting tooth and nail to stay in this competition.

“It’s the best competition in the world, the strongest competition in the world.

“They’ll be up against sides with much bigger budgets, but it’s a challenge that Postecoglou and his players are very much up to.

“These two games against Leipzig are must-wins. But they did well against Real Madrid for an hour and that is a good sign going forwards.

“Bringing back a point away from home is massive.

“If they finish third in the group and drop down to the Europa League then they can go forward – but I think they can stay in the Champions League.”

If Celtic are to make it out of their group, it would be viewed as a great success by many. It’s not an easy thing to do, especially with the quality of teams with bigger financial muscle Celtic will come up against.

Dropping down to the Europa League wouldn’t be a disaster, but, of course, we want to be in the top competition after Christmas.
