Former goalkeeper and current pundit Alan Rough has said he thin that midfielder David Turnbull has similarities to the likes of Paul McStay and Tommy Burns.

As quoted by the Daily Record, speaking on PLZ Soccer, Rough said from what he has watched of the former Motherwell defender he thinks he can see him being in the same sort of mould as both McStay or Burns, the sort of player who probably isn’t been seen in this country in many years.

“He has the same compose [as McStay] and he’s got the same kind of style.

“He is very elegant on the ball and can see a pass. I would put Tommy Burns in that category as well. I’m not saying he’s as good as them, all I’m saying as he looks like a similar player.

“It’s been a long, long time since I’ve seen any Scotland player get in around 18 yards and 22 yards and have a pop. He’s having a pop all the time and he’s not frightened to pull the trigger.

“I think that’s always good when you’re stickers aren’t getting marked very tightly.”

Now as he mentions, Rough isn’t saying that Turnbull is as good as either of the legendary duo who have arguably been two of the clubs best ever players. But from someone who will have watched both on the field and also Turnbull, he looks to have some similarities to his game.

Turnbull has produced a lot already in the Hoops and maybe more than some were expecting at this stage. He has been one of the few shining lights this season and could end it on a high with a call-up to the Scotland squad ahead of the Euros.

Despite all this, it still feels like we are to unlock the full potential of the 21-year old, so there could be plenty more to come.
