CHRIS SUTTON has criticised Peter Lawwell for this disaster of a season but does feel some of the criticism has been over the top.

The former Celtic striker surprisingly revealed the Celtic chief executive has called him on occasion to criticise Chris for his Record Sport column. Something which isn’t uncommon between managers and pundits but a little less so with chief execs.

Sutton tells the same column today, the pair have never seen eye to eye and that’s also down to the way his departure from the club was handled back after Martin O’Neill had left and Gordon Strachan had come in.

The furore surrounding the club doesn’t seem to end at the moment and even Lawwell’s apology was criticised because after what looked to be a sincere sorry to the Celtic support, he participated in a four minute excuse making session where he put the pandemic as the number one culprit in Celtics bad season.

It’s not washing with supporters who have seen their chances of ten in a row go up in smoke.

Speaking about the whole situation, Sutton says we can’t forget nearly two decades of dominance over one season but there’s questions to be answered. The Bt pundit also wonders who watched the Lawwell apology video before it went out and thought the entire content was ok:

Listen, this is not be being loyal to him or anything like that. If anything, we haven’t seen eye to eye over the years. He has called me criticising my columns.

It goes back to my playing days when I wasn’t too happy with the way my Celtic departure was handled.

I don’t have an axe to grind either though. It’s just the way it goes.

The club should have protected him more with that line about Celtic being affected more than any club. The interview went out on the club’s website and the question should have been asked for him to clarify it.

Did they not watch the clip before it went out? They must have know how that line was going to go down.

It’s just another misstep in a disastrous season full of them. But people wanted Lawwell to apologise and he did. Now he didn’t apologise enough, or to enough people.

The way I saw it he was saying sorry to anyone who was offended by the trip in the circumstances and admitted they shouldn’t have gone.

But I don’t see the same clambers for apologies from the SFA, SPFL or government for green lighting the trip.

It’s all got a bit messy and Celtic have only damaged themselves.

But, for all I might not get on with him, I’ve never had any doubts Lawwell has always had Celtic’s interests at heart.

And while this season has been an unmitigated disaster, you can’t just dismiss two decades of dominance.

Celtic need to regroup and fast. Next season could be another struggle if the bhoys don’t get their act together.
