Gordon Dalziel has hit out at Celtic’s baffling decision-making during the transfer window, pointing specifically to their handling of Hyunjun Yang’s failed move to Birmingham City.
The South Korean winger was reportedly down in England to complete the switch, with Birmingham ready to pay around £3m. But Celtic’s dithering on green-lighting the deal led to the Championship side pulling the plug.
On Open Goal, Dalziel couldn’t believe it: “They were getting £3m for him, three million quid! And because they’ve not fulfilled positions, they brought him back.
“How is Yang feeling? Because Yang wanted to go to Birmingham. He wanted out of Celtic and wanted to go there.
“I thought £3m for Yang would have been good.”
While Yang returned to Glasgow, Birmingham didn’t sit idle. They swiftly moved to sign a different winger – former Celtic fan-favourite Patrick Roberts. The 27-year-old joined the Blues on loan from Sunderland and links up with ex-Celtic assistant Chris Davies, now in charge at St Andrews.
With only James Forrest as an established option on that flank, the irony of letting Yang go and failing to sign a replacement, only to see a known talent like Roberts snapped up elsewhere, hasn’t gone unnoticed.
No one is saying that Patrick Roberts was an option for Celtic, but it’s frustrating that no right-winger was picked up in the summer market, despite Nicolas Kuhn leaving, and that move was speculated since the winter window.
It was a shambolic summer window from the club, who are now under increased pressure to talk to the fans.
