RAFA BENITEZ was hotly tipped to become the new Celtic manager during the summer when Celtic fans imaginations were running wild. Given that Brendan Rodgers has left in February and Neil Lennon was in place less than 24 hours later as the interim boss, Celtic fans were of the opinion Neil would be holding down the fort until the board could look for a replacement.

Neil Lennon was delivered a treble treble for the bhoys after picking up the pieces and was offered the job that day at Hampden.

At the time, it was a shock for a lot of Celtic fans who has heard rumblings the club were feeling out Rafa Benitez who was still mulling over a Newcastle contract at the time. Rafa would eventually leave the St James’ Park outfit for China.

Asked about the interest from Celtic, the Spaniard admitted he’d heard things through the grapevine but he was never approached about the role.

“I was aware of some interest but we didn’t have any official approach.” Rafa told SunSport.

“I was still under contract at Newcastle so we couldn’t even consider this option.”

It would have been an ambitious move from the board but considering the resources we’re clearly working with at the moment, Rafa would have likely passed.
