Celtic’s interest in Farès Ghedjemis has been given another twist after Rangers have reportedly seen an £8 million bid rejected by Serie A side Frosinone.
The Algerian winger has emerged as a target for the Hoops in recent days as Martin O’Neill continues his search for reinforcements in the wide areas.
However, despite reports elsewhere suggesting Celtic had already lodged an offer, CeltsAreHere understands that is not the case.
Celtic have registered their interest in the 23-year-old, but discussions have not yet progressed to the stage of a formal bid.
Sky Sports now say that Rangers have tested Frosinone’s resolve with an offer worth around £8 million, only for the Italian club to reject it.
According to Sky, Frosinone are reluctant to sell Ghedjemis this summer unless they receive an offer in the region of €15-20 million (£13-17 million).
That valuation would make him one of the most expensive signings in Scottish football history and represents a significant hurdle for any interested club.
It raises obvious questions over whether a deal is financially realistic for the Hoops.
The Hoops have already broken their transfer record to sign Kasper Høgh this summer and continue to pursue other priority targets, including Mika Baur, while also looking to strengthen several areas of the squad.
Spending upwards of £13 million on a winger would represent another major statement.
Celtic’s interest remains just that.
No official offer has been submitted, and with Frosinone holding out for a substantial fee, there is still a considerable gap to bridge before the situation develops into anything more concrete.
It is certainly one to watch, but at this stage, the asking price alone makes Ghedjemis one of the more difficult deals Celtic could attempt to pull off before the transfer window closes.
