Celtic’s next UEFA Champions League opponents, RB Leipzig, lost 2-1 to Borussia Dortmund yesterday ahead of their clash with the Hoops on Tuesday evening.
Marco Rose took his team to Signal Iduna Park on Saturday night and saw them suffer their maiden Bundesliga defeat of the season.
Although imposing striker Benjamin Sesko gave Leipzig a first-half lead, Dortmund drew themselves level three minutes later. Serhou Guirassy then scored what turned out to be the winner with 25 to go.
Despite defeat, Leipzig remain second in the German top flight and within touching distance (three points specifically) of Bayern Munich.
The Red Bulls still have the best defence in the Bundesliga, having conceded just five goals in nine games so far this campaign.
Key to such backline solidity has been first-choice goalkeeper Peter Gulasci. He was previously an injury doubt for Tuesday night but returned between the sticks yesterday.
Leipzig narrowly lost on Saturday, but the stats [FotMob] suggest they were poor. They created no big chances and an xG of just 0.48, compared to Dortmund, who manufactured six big chances and a 2.21 xG.
Desperate to get some Champions League points on the board, the Germans will see midweek as the perfect opportunity to finally get up and running in Europe’s premier club competition.
