DAVIE PROVAN has pulled no punches in his appraisal of Celtic chairman Ian Bankier after the Hoops custodian released a statement to the support.

The Sky Sports commentator appears to be astonished by how things have been handled by the club hierarchy this season.

Celtic have been affected by the current global crisis and Provan accepts that’s happening everywhere in football. However, the former Celt took exception to the reason why profits are down.

Bankier puts it down to Celtic not selling any of their prized assets last summer unlike previous seasons when Dembele and Tierney left for big money.

Provan believes the clubs coffers could have looked much better had the club acted on their domestic dominance and advantage while their rivals were on their knees.

There’s no punches pulled at all during Provan’s rant; he explains had Celtic shot for European glory, the club, the team and the bank balance would look much better right now.

Writing in his SunSport column, Provan said:

Here’s the reality Mr Chairman. When it comes to advantages, you’ll never be handed a bigger one than Rangers going bust.

You were handed the keys to the bank.

That £20m you have in the vault this morning could be countless millions more if you had shown an ounce of Champions League ambition.

Instead, you’ve blown the biggest gift offered to any Celtic board.

Bankier sees it differently, putting the financial results down to “reduced gains from player trading as we sought to keep our squad intact”, and “prolonged value-destructive impact of Covid-19”.

Really? So nothing to do with losing the Champions League qualifier to a bang-average Ferencvaros?

Or finishing bottom of their Europa League group?

Seems Bankier has airbrushed this season’s awful European campaign.

In general, we have been reactive instead of proactive when it comes to European football. There’s been a reluctance to go above and beyond and a culture of just doing enough to be ahead domestically but never pushing on.
