Red Star Belgrade boss Vladan Milojević has already turned his focus to Celtic after his team’s win in the Eternal Derby.
The Serbian champions host Celtic at the Marakana on Wednesday in what should be a fiery Europa League opener. Milojević praised his side for their derby display but was quick to look ahead, urging Red Star’s supporters to come out in numbers and back the team.
Celtic head to Serbia with confidence after their own big result, a 4-0 win against Partick Thistle in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final. Both sides are in strong form, but Milojević stressed that he sees Celtic as tough European opposition.
Milojević shared his thoughts on the upcoming clash and the respect he has for Celtic’s experience in Europe.
He said: (crvenazvezdafk YouTube), “Well, you know how it is, I’ve separated the championship and the European League. We’re starting with Celtic, and I hope that our fans will play well in the game midweek.
“You have to stay focused on the domestic league too, but of course it’s nice when you beat Partizan at their stadium.
“On the other hand, I have no doubt our supporters will fill the stadium again, to help the players and lift them.”
“Because for sure, when a team like Celtic comes – a club from the Champions League group, who played in the play-off, last year in the group stage – it’s a serious team.”
Milojević’s comments shows the scale of the occasion for Red Star. Beating Partizan may have been a boost for morale, but the Serbian coach is already preparing for a different type of contest against Rodgers’ side.
By calling Celtic a “serious team,” he acknowledged their experience at Champions League level and the danger they pose away from home. It’s a sign of respect that will not be lost on Celtic supporters.
The Marakana is expected to be packed to capacity, with Red Star’s supporters urged to create a hostile atmosphere. Celtic will have to show resilience in what is one of Europe’s most intimidating stadiums.
