UEFA have appointed José María Sánchez as tonight’s referee for Celtic’s group opener against Rennes in the Europa League.

For those of you who pay attention to frivolous details, José was part of the match official team during Celtic’s win against Leipzig last season at Celtic Park.

The Spaniard will be tasked with calling it down the middle this evening as Celtic try and find a way to stop the French side from scoring.

The referee is a regular La Liga official and last season gave out 145 yellows and 5 red cards for the full La Liga campaign.

Neil Lennon goes into the game with his team knowing there is no room for error if they are to get a result. The bhoys will have to step it up a gear to make a statement in Rennes.

Hopefully José will have a quiet night on the whistle and we’ll be talking about the football come full time.
