Reliable journalist Stephen McGowan has admitted he has his doubts over the recent suggestions it could cost Celtic as much as £10 million to sign Tottenham Hotspur loanee Cameron Carter Vickers.

Since joining the club on deadline day in the summer, Carter Vickers has become a mainstay in Ange Postecoglou’s side, with many fans being impressed with his performances so far this campaign.

However, during the week, a report from the Daily Record (Read More) suggested that a deal to sign the 23-year old could cost the Hoops upwards of £10 million, which left some supporters questioning the massive price tag.

Speaking on Clyde One Superscoreboard, McGowan gave his thoughts on the deal, suggesting his belief that Celtic wouldn’t look to pay that sort of money for the Tottenham defender, with the proposed fee being too ‘rich.’

“One of the frustrations for the Celtic fans over the years has been the projects.

“Spending one, one and a half million on Dudu Dahan signings, bringing them in, don’t all necessarily work out.

“And you wonder sometimes if they would be better actually spending a bit more on players of quality.

“Look at Edouard, okay, probably couldn’t get quite as much for Edouard in the end as they wanted.

“But, you know, you tend to invest a bit of money; you tend to get it back eventually.

“I maybe just wonder if a Carter Vickers and a Jota, just those couple of pieces of quality they should prioritise rather than in gambling on the Ismail Soro type settings.

“But £10m? Again, I repeat, I don’t know if that figures accurate or not. I really don’t.

“I think that’s a bit rich, and I couldn’t really see Celtic paying that anyway.”

The majority of Celtic supporters who have seen the report were surprised to hear that sort of fee get thrown around.

Especially when you consider Celtic’s reluctancy to spend big money on players, surely this isn’t the sort of deal they would agree to for a loan player who will have one year left on his contract this summer?

It will certainly be interesting to see how the move plays out at the end of the summer. For now, though, the American defender’s focus will remain on the busy run of schedules we face in this winter period.
