Report: Celtic Eye Kasper Schmeichel Replacement

Celtic are reportedly actively exploring goalkeeping options ahead of next season, with Nick Pope and Illan Meslier among the names being considered.

The club’s recruitment team, led by Brendan Rodgers, is understood to be assessing both permanent and free-transfer possibilities as part of a wider rebuild of key positions.

The discussion comes as Kasper Schmeichel’s form has come under renewed scrutiny. The 38-year-old extended his deal in January 2025 until the summer of 2026, calling it “the easiest contract I’ve ever signed.” But after a run of errors, against Braga in Europe and Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final, there’s a growing belief Celtic may need a long-term successor between the posts.

Despite his experience and professionalism, Schmeichel’s recent performances have divided opinion. He remains a respected voice in the dressing room, but Brendan Rodgers is believed to be pushing for a younger, more dynamic goalkeeper capable of anchoring the team for the next phase of his project at Parkhead.

Alongside Pope and Meslier, Stefan Ortega of Manchester City and Justin Bijlow of Feyenoord have also been mentioned as possible targets. Pope’s wages and contract at Newcastle make him a difficult signing, while Meslier could be attainable if Leeds drop into  the Championship.

Journalist Graeme Bailey said: (67 Hail Hail) “They are looking at options on potential frees… and there are a few in the Premier League.

“There are lots of options for Celtic, but it will also be dependent on who is picking the side.”

Bailey’s comments show that Celtic are taking a careful approach, trying to balance spending wisely with keeping strong competition in the squad. Under Rodgers, the club’s scouting network has grown, with a clear focus on smart signings and long-term planning

For now, Schmeichel is still Celtic’s first-choice keeper, and his experience and leadership are respected. But Rodgers and his staff are already thinking ahead, aware that both Europe and domestic football demand consistency and control.

The situation also raises questions about Viljami Sinisalo’s future. The young Finnish goalkeeper has impressed whenever he’s been called upon, showing calmness and quick reflexes beyond his years.

Rodgers even hinted recently that he had considered sending Sinisalo out on loan, a comment that surprised many supporters who see him as a real contender for the number one spot.

Whether Schmeichel can find his top form again or a new goalkeeper steps in, Celtic are focused on making sure the position is secure, and that whoever plays can live up to the club’s high expectations.
