Kieran Devlin of the Cynic and The Athletic has claimed his sources told him earlier this season both Gordon Strachan and Martin O’Neill were sounded out about taking over from Neil Lennon last year.

When things were going good badly, Devlin claims the former Celtic managers were approached to take over for the rest of the season if they were to let Neil Lennon go. However, both declined.

It’s clear both men have an affinity for Neil Lennon and would not make it easy for Celtic to ditch the Irishman. That’s exactly what happened and Neil Lennon was given much more time than he should have to put things right.

In the end, the league was lost and the manager has finally been moved on. The bhoys now need to conduct a major rebuild this summer, there’s no sign yet of who will be the next man in charge.

It won’t be Martin O’Neill or Gordon Strachan, thankfully. Two great managers in their time but not something we should revisit.
