The future of Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi is under intense speculation, with Rennes reportedly in advanced talks to sign the Japanese striker for £10m. According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, the move is being driven by Kyogo’s desire to play in a top-five European league, increasing his chances of featuring in Japan’s World Cup squad.

While this alone is a major talking point for Celtic fans, there’s another intriguing angle to the story: Jota. The Portuguese winger, who left Celtic two summers ago for a big-money move to Saudi Arabia, is currently with Rennes after a switch to Ligue 1 last summer. However, his time in France has been far from successful, and a move away after just six months is now being discussed.

Joseph reports that a Celtic return for Jota has been discussed between the two clubs. While no direct swap deal is on the table, both transfers could run concurrently if agreements are reached. Jota’s departure from Celtic in 2023 was a blow, but his recent struggles for game time at Rennes have paved the way for a potential reunion.

For Celtic, Jota’s return would provide a proven option in attack and offer fans a familiar face to lift the squad during a crucial period of the season. Jota’s flair, pace, and knack for scoring in big moments were key during his time in Glasgow, and there’s no doubt he could reignite his career back in the Scottish Premiership.

Kyogo’s Potential Exit

Losing Kyogo, though, would be a significant setback for Brendan Rodgers. The striker has been instrumental this season, scoring 12 goals and providing four assists across all competitions. Yet, if the £10m deal goes through, it would provide Celtic with the funds to reinvest in a replacement.

It’s difficult to imagine a situation where a replacement isn’t already lined up.

Whether Celtic push to bring Portuguese winger back remains to be seen, but the pieces are there for what could be one of the most dramatic transfer windows in recent memory. The possibility of losing Kyogo is a bitter pill to swallow, but the potential for a Jota homecoming offers a silver lining.

We’ll continue to follow both stories as they develop. One thing’s for sure – the January window just became a whole lot more interesting for Celtic fans.
