A publication in Greece claim Celtic are closing in on top goalkeeping target Vasílios Barkas and have even thrashed out a contract with the player should they have a bid accepted by AEK Athens.

ENWSI.gr state that the club’s are close and the player is ready to make the move if the club’s can come to an agreement.

There’s no word back in Scotland about the deal with Celtic usually quite good at keeping news tight at their end.

The club is in desperate need of goalkeeping reinforcements after losing to of our first team goalkeepers over the summer.

The publication writes: ‘Barkas and Celtic are very close in terms of his contract (around 600,000 euros per year) and the Union is waiting for the new improved proposal of the Scots after the first (3.5 + 1 million euro bonus) which received a negative answer. The information states that AEK is soon waiting for the new proposal of the Celts close to 5 million euros plus a resale rate of about 15%.’

If true, the club could be in the final stages of the pursuit for the goalkeeper who looks very much like a Nicky Hammond find.

The head of operations has been overseeing changes to recruitment and gets final say on a lot of things before presenting his team’s work to Peter Lawwell and Neil Lennon.

It will be very interesting to see if the club can get a goalkeeper in by the time the league kicks off next Sunday.
