It is hard to believe we can be talking about football transfers in March while the world is on lockdown to try and contain the Coronavirus.

Nevertheless, Record Sport has reported this morning that Celtic are in the hunt for Atletico Madrid’s 19-year-old striker Rodrigo Riquelme. The paper runs the usual narrative that both Glasgow teams are fighting for his signature but that Celtic have made a “Big Economic Offer” whatever that means.

Assessing the Celtic squad and in particular and its current strike force, this rumour comes out of the blue. Unless Neil Lennon is thinking of moving one of his four strikers on during the summer.

The other option is that at 19 he falls into the one for the future category. He already has that status in Madrid – we doubt the player will sign a contract at any club to be considered one for the future.

I have read three different articles this morning that all described this kid as the next Antoine Griezmann. In fairness to Athletico, they have a serious record of producing and developing some of the worlds best strikers. The notion that Celtic are about to pinch the next Griezmann from under their nose will take some convincing.

  1. I commend Steven Naysmith for his attitude during this period of uncertainty, in not only taking a 50% payout, but also committing himself to Hearts even if they are dropped . Would be nice to see Celtic players and back room staff going along a similar route. We already know the amount of charity work and donations the club has/is doing around the world. Thank you and stay safe at this time and come out fighting, when the football resumes.
