There has been an outpouring of gratitude and banter with the news that Georgios Samaras has decided to hang up his boots at the age of only 33.

The Greek frontman has had a good career, with his best years coming at Celtic, a club the striker would fall in love with.

Samaras left Celtic just before the Rodgers revolution with no new contract forthcoming when his deal was running out.

Signed from Manchester City after an initial six-month loan deal, the striker became a cult hero with the Celtic support.

He could dazzle in frustrate in equal measure and gave us some great memories.

Since leaving Celtic, the former Greece international has found a permanent and settled home hard to come by.

After leaving Samsunspor in the summer, the big man had a very important decision to make.

Then OFI Crete came calling.

The Greek club is going through a transitional process with new backers coming into the boardroom and a hunger to become a force in the Greece Superleague.

According to OFI themselves, Samaras along with his father have been tasked with helping to move the club forward, and it looks like the real reason Samaras gave up his playing days is he might about be named the club’s new Chief Executive.

Yes, Samaras could be moving into Peter Lawwell’s line of work!

This means Sammy would be helping to operate and run the club at a very senior level.

Having started his career at OFI, he will have a very close bond with the club and the pull of helping them move forward would have weighed heavily on the player’s heart.

Maybe one day he’ll take Lawwell’s job.

  1. Just loved big Sammy. Yes, he could be frustrating but when he was on his game he was unplayable. Great memories of someone who came to love the club and a true gentleman.
Wish him nothing but the best for the future.

  2. I am so pleased for Sammy and I hope he has great success in his new role with his Dad.
I was absolutely heartbroken that Celtic could not find a way to keep him at the club to the end and then beyond his playing days. His skills were worth seeing and He gave everything to us, including his loyalty. To me, he is an example of a good, honest and loyal human being. A well rounded person and a hero, on and off the park.
    Hail, hail Sammy. ??
