It was with great sadness we heard of the passing of Fernando Ricksen this morning at the age of 44.

The former Rangers star was suffering from the debilitating and horrible Motor Neurone Disease – an illness which also claimed the life of Jimmy Johnstone.

Fernando had been suffering for a long time since his diagnosis but regularly attended events to raise funds and awareness despite the pain he was in.

He was a pantomime villain for the Celtic support back in the day and as much as we booed the player back then we have so much respect for the man and the way he dealt with his illness.

Rivalry begins and ends on the field of play and we’d like to think Fernando lapped up the boos from the Celtic support during his career. Our thoughts and prayers are with  Fernando and his loved ones. May he rest in peace.
