BELGIUM boss Roberto Martinez was due to take his seat in the stands to watch Celtic take on Hibs on the 29th of December. However, with the winter break being brought forward this would not be possible.

He was keen to watch Shaun Maloney, the new Easter Road side boss, take on his old club. Maloney was Martinez’s right-hand man at Belgium with the pair managing the best-ranked country in the world.

Speaking to The Sun, he expressed how he wanted to witness Maloney face his former club and how he expects the former Scotland International to compete at the top;

“Shaun has always been excited about attacking, making the difference in the final third. But he’s experienced enough to keep a team balanced. I believe the commitment, hard work and ideas of Shaun will affect every aspect of this club.

“Shaun will build a strong team, one with the mentality to compete against the Old Firm and make it a really successful story. What you’re going to see is him getting the very best out of Hibernian’s players. That’s two wins already. I’ve no doubt he’s already making an impact on Hibernian’s results.”

“I was hoping to go to Celtic Park to see Shaun facing his old club for the first time.

“There will be other opportunities and I look forward to seeing his Hibs team.

“Slowly they will become very recognisable in the way he wants them to play.

During the search for a new manager, there were calls for the pair to take a seat in the Parkhead dugout. Even after Ange was appointed, Maloney was tipped to return to Paradise and be the Greek-Aussie’s assistant.

Many Celtic fans will be keeping a close eye on Maloney and Hibs with the hope one day he may return to Celtic Park.

  1. Being a tad presumptive there. I wouldn’t want Maloney managing Celtic. Both Jim & Martinez have won nothing as a managing team, and this is with having the best group of players at their disposal for several years and completions. Also a pro Madonna and has zero regard or respect for the fans. Maloney managing Celtic would only be to suit his ego and bolster his CV. I’ll have Ange and managers of his ilk everyday if the week over a Maloney or Martinez.
