BRENDAN RODGERS has not given up hope of re-signing Dedryck Boyata to a new contract with many believing the player is running down his contract.

Speaking after Celtic’s emphatic win over Hearts on Saturday, the Parkhead boss was asked about the Belgium international’s future and Rodgers didn’t believe it was a cut and dry.

“There is always a possibility (of Boyata staying), but we just have to see. It is between him and the club.”

Boyata was outstanding against Hearts and has been a real rock at the back for Celtic since his early season shenanigans.

The defender has sparked up a great relationship with Filip Benkovic and they continue to boss attacking lines in the SPFL.

Celtic rejected a sizeable £7million bid for Boyata back in the summer from Fulham which sparked the player demanding to leave.

At the time, Brendan Rodgers told Dedrcyk he couldn’t leave because he didn’t have a replacement.

While a lot of Celtic fans thought the club should just do the deal, it has turned out to be a very shrewd decision by the Celtic manager.

There is massive chance the club have let a lot of money slip through their fingers if the defender does not sign a new deal and leaves in the summer – but right now it’s all about his efforts on the pitch.
