Dane Murray’s form on loan at Queen’s Park last season earned him a new contract through 2028, and the 22-year-old’s composure on the ball has caught the eye since returning to Lennoxtown. A home-grown defender breaking into the first team would resonate strongly with supporters, particularly in a period where Celtic need fresh energy and hunger.
Then there’s Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, the highly-rated 19-year-old Manchester City loanee. Tall, athletic and comfortable stepping into midfield, he represents a modern centre-half profile that Rodgers values. While untested at Premiership level, his potential is clear, and a strong showing in training could fast-track him into contention.
Celtic’s defensive strength has long been built on stability and understanding. With Carter-Vickers sidelined, Rodgers must find a new partnership to carry that standard. Whether it’s the experienced Trusty, the developing Murray, or the exciting Simpson-Pusey, the opportunity is there, and someone will need to grasp it quickly.
