Since becoming Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has hardly put a foot wrong. An undefeated domestic season so far, Champions league qualification and the chance at a treble. It’s been a whirlwind first season for the Irishman as he looks to build a formidable side that can continue to dominate.

However, today he righted the wrong of one of his very first decisions as Celtic manager when he brought Dorus De Vries in to replace Craig Gordon.

While Craig wasn’t having the best of times and many wondered if his body was giving up on him Rodgers brought De Vries into not just be a shot stopper but someone who could distribute the ball well to his teammates.

That experiment came to an abrupt end against Kilmarnock when a 40-yard shot beat Dorus, leaving egg on his face and giving the manager little choice but to hook him at half time. The games that preceded the Killie game had hardly covered him in glory either.

Craig came back in for the second half and hasn’t looked back since. What is also clear to see is his distribution (for the most part) has got much better. You can see him thinking about where he’s putting the ball more. Further proof how Rodgers management can get the best out of even the most comfortable of players.

At the start of the season, Craig’s time at Celtic looked to be up but by January Chelsea were trying to sign him. It has been a monumental turnaround which has now culminated in the player receiving a massive 3 and a half year deal with the club to continue as Rodgers number one.

The manager made a mistake by dropping him in the first place but there is a case for it being the catalyst behind Gordon’s improvements giving the manager a positive reaction and a better goalkeeper. Onwards and upwards.

Hail Hail Craig Gordon.

  1. I wouldn’t say he made a mistake in dropping because as you say it was the catalyst behind Gordon’s improvement.

I would say that it more likely that Brendan knew what he was doing all along.
