It came as a bolt from the blue on Monday evening when we saw the images of Odsonne Edouard sitting out of training in Greece. Many hoped it was just a precautionary measure but in actual fact, the Frenchman was ruled out of not just the first XI but the entire matchday squad.

Since then Celtic have been assessing the striker, but it’s now believed Eddy will not make Saturday’s Glasgow Derby against Partick Thistle and may miss the first leg of Celtic’s Europa League play-off against Suduva.

This is bad news for Brendan Rodgers but he will be buoyed by the fact Moussa Dembele seems to be back up and running. It seems when one striker comes back into the fold the other one drops out with an injury.

It will still be frustrating for the Celtic manager who was keen to cement Celtic’s versatility by linking both Dembele and Edouard up as a front two.

There’s still plenty of time for that partnership to blossom and it showed signs of fantastic potential in pre-season.

Celtic will head to Fir Hill tomorrow when they start the defence of their League Cup – a trophy they’ve won twice in a row.
