BRENDAN RODGERS has told Dedryck Boyata it was a ‘stupid’ red card to receive at the end of the bhoys win against St Johnstone.

The defender hurled abuse at the referee after he let play go on for what looked like a foul on him.

The World Cup star looked incensed as he continued to shout over at the referee John Beaton for a period of time before Beaton told captain Scott Brown to shut him up before he was sent off.

Seconds later the red card was produced and Boyata accepted his fate at that point.

Speaking about the incident, Brendan Rodgers bemoaned the stupid way his player got himself sent off.

“It is a stupid red card. He has got enough opportunities to not get sent off.” the Celtic manager admitted.

“It was a very emotional game towards the end.

“Dedryck feels as if he should have got a free-kick and didn’t get it.

“In fairness to John, he gives him a chance not to get the red card. It’s not what we would want.”

Boyata will now miss Celtic’s semi final against Hearts next month. With fit defenders thin on the ground at Celtic Park these days – it could prove a vital factor.

  1. Do what everybody else does and appeal the red card. Maybe the secret threesome will rescind it and cheating seating should be told to man up. Sticks and stones etc. HH
