Brendan Rodgers used his pre-match comments before Celtic’s 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock to highlight the qualities of new signing Sebastian Tounekti.
Tounekti made an impressive debut at Rugby Park, troubling Kilmarnock’s defence and playing a key role in Celtic’s attacking play. Rodgers believes the Tunisian can grow into a regular contributor with time and the right guidance.
To make his point, Rodgers referenced former Celt Nicolas Kühn, who left the club two months ago to join Serie A side Como. Under Rodgers’ coaching, Kühn developed his scoring output, which ultimately increased his value.
The comparison was designed to show supporters how Celtic intend to improve their new signings. Rodgers is confident Tounekti can follow a similar path, adding end product to his natural flair on the wing.
He said: (Celtic TV), “They bring a freshness and a hunger to it.
“Seb (Tounekti), on the side, I am really excited by him. He’s a type of player that Celtic will love. He’s good in a one-v-one. He can take people on, and what we want to do over time is add goals to his game.
“Similar to what we did with Nicolas Kuhn. He was a player who wasn’t renowned for scoring so much, but we were able to add value to him by having him score more goals, and we are hoping we can do the same with our new attacking players.”
Rodgers’ comments show he views Tounekti as a long-term project who can grow into a match-winner at Celtic. The winger already has the raw attributes to trouble defenders, and with added consistency, his impact could become decisive.
By referencing Kühn, Rodgers also reminded supporters of the club’s ability to improve players and profit from their development. Kühn arrived with potential and left with an enhanced reputation, proof of what Celtic’s system can deliver.
For Tounekti, the challenge will be to add goals to his natural trickery and take his game to the next level. If he does, Celtic could have a player capable of deciding the biggest matches.
Rodgers has set out the pathway, and with the trust of his manager, Tounekti has every chance of becoming the next success story at Celtic Park.
