It emerged early on Wednesday Celtic had made an ambitious play to bring Tottenham left-back Ryan Sessegnon to Glasgow.

Ther former Fulham man who was signed by Spurs for a touch under £25m [TransferMarkt] last year has been struggling to get a place in Jose Mourinho’s side.

There’s no doubt the defender has major potential but if Celtic are to land them, the finances involved could be too much for the Scottish champions.

Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joesph confirmed Celtic’s approach but made the admission the financial cost of bringing Ryan to the club has proved problematic.

Celtic have been sounding out certain other left-backs who could make the move to the club within the next week.

Alfie Doughty has been talked about but Charlton have held firm to this point. The team are in Bosnia ahead of their European clash with Sarajevo on Thursday night, while Neil Lennon is away, the club will still be working in the background with a view to bringing one last player in.
