In his recent Daily Record column [print edition, 12/09/23] former Hearts player Ryan Stevenson took a moment to talk about the unforgettable Masters Football event that unfolded last Saturday evening. Stevenson became an internet sensation, but perhaps for a reason he didn’t quite expect: a humorous tangle with Celtic’s Kelvin Wilson that left both players on the ground.

Writing about the incident, Stevenson explained, “He’s a big lad, so God knows what I thought I was doing. All I remember is him taking the ball off me and me thinking, ‘I’m just going to hold on to him!'”

As the two wrestled for possession, Stevenson’s competitive spirit flared up. “He kept trying to charge off, but I thought, ‘If I’m going down, he’s coming down with me!’ By the time we both hit the deck, letting go wasn’t really an option.”

It was brilliant to see former Celtic defender Kelvin Wilson standing his ground, proving he’s still a force to be reckoned with. Stevenson, on the other hand, didn’t seem to mind the tussle too much, even if it led to some unintended consequences.

“It might not have looked like it, but it was all just a good bit of fun. I may have spat the dummy a wee bit, but that’s what happens when your competitive instincts kick back in,” Stevenson admitted.

However, the hilarious encounter had its repercussions. “It left its mark, though, and my legs and backside have been aching with all those carpet burns,” Stevenson added, rounding off his column on a lighter note.

The viral moment with Wilson added some extra entertainment to a night already filled with thrilling matches, including an edge-of-your-seat win for Celtic over Rangers. For both Stevenson and fans alike, the Masters Football event proved to be a memorable evening, full of the highs, lows, and laughter that make Scottish football so endearing. And a Celtic win on the night was the icing on the cake.
