Celtic Women’s boss Elena Sadiku cut a frustrated figure after her side’s 2-1 loss to Glasgow City, a result that leaves the Hoops languishing in fourth place and six points adrift of the league leaders.
Despite pulling one back late on, Sadiku admitted her team didn’t do enough to warrant a result and pointed to a growing gap in resources as a key concern.
“I feel right now that we are in a situation where teams are investing strongly and you can see how tight it is every season. Teams are getting better and better and we need to push in the same direction as well. It is not about a having fear factor but the fact that other teams are investing really well.” [Herald]
Sadiku’s comments echo a broader frustration increasingly felt across the club, a lack of tangible investment in the squad itself, despite infrastructural upgrades like the Barrowfield project.
While the state-of-the-art facility is a major boost in terms of training, there’s a sense that without significant player investment, the gap to the top will continue to grow.
Celtic don’t fund the women’s team nearly enough, with Rangers even putting more into theirs.
With Glasgow City five points clear of secoind place and six from Celtic, sitting off the pace, questions will continue to mount around whether the club is doing enough to support the ambitions of its women’s side on the pitch, not just off it. Pressure will start to grow again on Sadiku, who guined the Hoops to a trophyless season last term, and rumours of a split in the dressing room.
