Celtic ‘Considering Move’ for England-Capped Star – Report

Celtic are interested in bringing goalkeeper Sam Johnstone to the club, a new report claims.

It is no secret that Celtic have been eyeing up competition for Viljami Sinisalo between the sticks. Alongside the Finland international, Ross Doohan remains the only other senior goalkeeper at the club.

Blackburn Rovers’ Balazs Toth emerged as one option, but no official bid has been made yet. Gavin Bazuni of Southampton and IF Brommapojkarna’s Leo Cavallius were among the other names. 

And now, according to the Daily Mail, Johnstone’s name has appeared in connection with the Hoops. The 33-year-old has been capped four times by England, with his first coming in 2021 when he was at West Brom.

He’s been at Wolverhampton Wanderers since August 2024, but his future looks increasingly uncertain following the club’s relegation to the English Championship.

Jose Sa returned to the side following his involvement at the World Cup with Portugal, while Wolves have agreed a deal for Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper Joao Virginia. John Ruddy is reportedly in talks for a return to the club, throwing Johnstone’s future into uncertainty.

The Manchester United academy graduate underwent shoulder surgery towards the end of last season, which ruled him out of the final matches of the season. He has since returned to training and has regained full movement in his shoulder and is near enough back to full fitness.

It looked certain that Celtic would bring in a ‘keeper close to Sinisalo’s age, but a move for Johnstone would suggest otherwise.

There has been no official bid at this stage. He remains another name thrown into the mix, with Celtic’s next move unclear.

They will prepare for another season in the Europa League following their 5-4 aggregate defeat to LASK in the Champions League play-off. What that means for many of the Hoops’ targets is unknown, but with one week left until the summer window shuts in Scotland, their next moves will be telling.

Johnstone would bring experience – having made over 350 senior appearances – and perhaps not demand as many minutes as another goalkeeper would. With his future at Wolves thrown up in the air and Wolves not likely to stand in his way should he depart, Celtic could decide to make their move.
