New Celtic signing Vasilis Barkas told the media he spoke to former Celtic hero Georgios Samaras about a move to the Hoops and the former striker’s reply was brilliant.

Speaking to SunSport, Barkas said:

“He just said ‘go, don’t even think about it’.

“He told me how Celtic was a very big team and the fans loved the team so much and were crazy about the team. That made my decision easier.

“But I already knew Celtic were a very big club with great fans and a great stadium which has a good atmosphere.

“I think all the players want to play for Celtic.

“But it was good to speak to Samaras. I was able to speak to him because one of my good friends plays for OFI, where Samaras is Sporting Director.”

Sammy was an enigma at Celtic. When he was on his game, he was outstanding. Other games, he seemed to drift through and could be very frustrating. The frontman’s temperament and his personality got him over with the supporters on the whole.

Barkas becomes the next Greek player to pull on a Celtic jersey and we hope he can be a major success in helping bring home the ten.

Celtic have been lucky with goalkeepers over the past 15 plus years. Boruc, Forster and Gordon have all been monumental in the club’s success. It will be strange to see a new face in goals but if Barkas can hit the ground running, there’s nothing stopping him from being the next best goalkeeper who can be mentioned in the same name as some of our former heroes.
